History of the Belmont Stakes
The Belmont Stakes was first run on June 19, 1867, at the Jerome Park Race Course in New York. With its rare 1 1/2-mile distance and rather challenging three turns (as opposed to two), the Belmont Stakes has established itself as the ultimate test of championship stamina in this country.

In its early days, the Belmont Stakes was run at 1 5/8 miles through 1873, but from 1890 through 1926 the race dropped down to 1 1/2 miles and has been run at that distance ever since.

Champion Sires:

Man o’ War heads the list of Belmont champion sires. Not only did he win the race himself in 1920, but three of his subsequent sires won it as well: American Flag in 1925, Crusader in 1926 and War Admiral in 1937, who went on to win the Triple Crown.

Shackleford Wins 2011 Preakness Stakes – Shackleford Leads Animal Kingdom Wire to Wire.

Less than two minutes after the gate sprang open, Shackleford was a cool classic winner.

The Preakness Stakes is an American Grade I stakes race 1-3/16 mile (1.91 km) thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old horses, held on the third Saturday in May each year at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57 kg); fillies 121 lb (55 kg).

Preakness Stakes 2011

Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore opened on October 25, 1870, and a horse named Preakness won the first stakes race on the program. Three years later, Pimlico honored that horse by naming a race for him.

The Preakness Stakes is now the second race in the Triple Crown for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds.

Big Red was a brash and charismatic champion racehorse and the breakaway winner of the 1973 Triple Crown.

In 21 career starts, the big chestnut stallion finished first 16 times and earned a total of $1,316,808.

He set a track record of 1:59 2/5 in the 1973 Kentucky Derby, and won the third leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, by an astonishing 31 lengths.

After his three-year-old season he was retired to stud at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky.

He died at the young age of 19; he was euthanized when a chronic foot disease called laminitis became too painful for him to bear.

He won the 1973 Belmont Stakes in 2:24 flat, a world record for 1.5 miles…

His sire was Bold Ruler, his mother Somethingroyal…
